What to Expect as First-Time Parents + Tips to Help You Prepare


Becoming a parent for the first time is one of life’s greatest joys and biggest adjustments. Amongst the sleepless nights, endless cuddles, and fresh-baby scent, many parents want to preserve those newborn moments forever. That’s where I come in!


At Jenny Sneap Photography, I specialise in natural, timeless newborn photography serving Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands. My aim is to create beautiful, relaxed galleries that capture the gentle love and connection between you and your baby without any stress or stiff posing.


Today, I’m giving you an insider look at what a real newborn session looks like, using a recent shoot with first-time parents and their gorgeous baby boy. Whether you're nervous, excited, or not quite sure what to expect, this guide will walk you through everything—from how to soothe your baby to what to bring, and why your fur-baby is more than welcome to join in on the experience.


The Newborn Experience – A Look Inside the Session


Let’s start with what your newborn session might actually look like. In this recent photoshoot, baby Harry was just under two weeks old—an ideal age for newborn photography. At this stage, babies are still very sleepy and snuggly, which makes it easier to capture those peaceful, curled-up moments.

The atmosphere was calm and unhurried. We used soft natural light, minimal props, and neutral colours to keep the focus on the connection between the family. Within their sweet gallery, you can see Dad gently cradling his newborn’s head which is such a tender moment full of love and pride and favourite pose I love to use in all of my newborn sessions. What makes these sessions so special is that they’re not just about your baby. They’re about you as a family. Your connection. Your bond. Your first moments of parenthood.


What to Expect at Your Newborn Photoshoot


Location:

My newborn sessions take place in the comfort of my light and airy Nottinghamshire studio.


Duration:

A typical newborn session lasts around 2-3 hours. This gives us time for feeding, cuddling, changing, and soothing without feeling rushed. I always work around your baby’s needs, not the clock. I only ever book one session per day, so you can be rest assured that we have all the time we need to get those cherished shots.


Style:

My photography style is soft, natural, and timeless. I use neutral tones, minimal styling, and gentle posing to let your baby’s unique features shine through. No baskets or gimmicks, just pure, authentic moments.


Top Tips for First-Time Parents


You don’t need to be perfectly prepared. I promise. But there are a few things that can help make your newborn session go smoothly:


1. Keep Baby Warm

Babies love being warm and cosy, especially when they're undressed or in light clothing for photos. I will make sure that the studio is warm enough, especially if we’re photographing baby in just a vest or swaddle.


Tip: A warm room and a full belly are the two biggest keys to a sleepy, content baby.


2. Feed Just Before the Session Starts

A recently fed baby is usually a sleepy, happy and content baby! Try to time a feed just before you leave the house or just as you arrive at the sstudio. Don’t stress if your baby doesn’t follow the plan, we can pause any time for top-ups or burping.


Bonus: Feeding also helps settle baby’s tummy and avoid fussiness during the shoot.


3. Have Essentials Close By

Here’s a quick checklist of useful items to have on hand:

Nappies and wipes

A spare muslin cloth or two

A couple of neutral baby grows or vests

A blanket or swaddle in soft, plain tones

A dummy (even if baby doesn’t usually take one, it can help for a moment during the shoot)


4. Dress in Simple, Neutral Clothing

For parents, opt for soft, neutral tones like cream, grey, white, beige, soft pastels or light denim. Avoid bold patterns or logos as they can be distracting in the images.

A simple white baby vest and light blanket keep the focus on the sweetest detail of all those tiny fingers gripping Mum or Dad’s hand. It’s little details like these that often become the most cherished images.


5. Relax – There’s No Right or Wrong

One of the most important things I tell new parents is this: relax. You don’t need to apologise if baby cries, poos, or needs feeding again. I’ve seen it all and I’ll work around it all. My sessions are baby-led, always.


Including Your Family Pet


Yes, your dog is welcome too! This family’s cockapoo was a total superstar during the session. Dogs are part of the family, and I love to include them in newborn shoots whenever possible. If your pet is calm and friendly, we can absolutely make them part of your gallery.


Tip: If you're unsure how your dog will behave during the session, have a friend or family member on hand to help with treats and distractions and to take them on a walk if needed, my studio is surrounded by woodland so they can have a good sniff!

When to Book Your Newborn Photoshoot


I recommend booking your newborn session while you’re still pregnant, ideally after your 12 or 20-week scan. We will choose a date in my diarythat is around 10 days after your due date with the flexibility to move the shoot date dependant on babies arrival. But don’t worry if you’ve already had your baby, just get in touch! I occasionally have last-minute slots, and older newborns (up to 8 weeks) can still have beautiful sessions too.


What Does a Newborn Gallery Look Like?


A typical newborn gallery includes:

  1. Wide shots of baby on the beanbang or in parents’ arms
  2. Close-ups of fingers, toes, lashes, and little details
  3. Natural, emotive family portraits
  4. Gentle interactions like cuddling, feeding, and soothing
  5. If desired, moments with siblings or pets

Each gallery is delivered via a private online link, beautifully edited in my signature natural style. You can choose your favourite images for digital downloads with a selection of prints included, and I also offer fine art albums and wall art.

The newborn stage is precious and it passes in a blur. A photography session is not just about the images (though those will be beautiful). It’s about pausing to breathe in the moment. To hold your baby close. To remember how it felt to become Mum or Dad for the first time.
