When to book your newborn photoshoot

My recommendation for the ideal time to schedule your newborn photoshoot is within the first two weeks of your baby’s life. Ideally booked while you are still pregnant, as I can very rarely accommodate bookings within this time-frame when your baby is here. During these first few weeks, your baby is still sleepy and can be comfortably positioned for those adorable, curled-up poses. I recommend reaching out to book your session around your 12-20 week scan to ensures we can plan and prepare for your photoshoot.

Preparing your baby for their photoshoot

To make the most of your newborn session, it’s important to prepare your baby beforehand. These newborn photoshoot tips will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone:

  • Feed your baby just before you leave the house to ensure they are calm and content. A full tummy helps keep your little one relaxed and sleepy. I also encourage a top up feed when you arrive.
  • Dress your baby in a plain baby-grow, avoiding anything that might leave marks on their skin. I have a number of plain baby-grows and rompers in the studio available for you to use for their photoshoot.
  • Bring along a comfort item to help soothe them during the session, such as a blanket, dummy or baby shusher. I will be playing calm and soothing music when you arrive to keep them nice and sleepy.

What to wear for your newborn photoshoot

I always encourage mums and dads to get in the frame at their newborn session, but thinking about what to wear can understandably be a bit daunting, especially when you maybe don't feel your best!

My advice is to choose neutral tones, outfits with subtle textures that complement each other and your home. Soft pastels, whites, and earth tones work beautifully for creating classic, timeless images. I recommend avoiding loud or clashing patterns or large logos If you’re unsure about what to wear, don’t worry—I’m happy to provide guidance, I usually have conversations with my clients on email or Whatsapp to discuss outfits for the whole family. Above all, you want to make sure you are comfortable!

What to bring to your newborn photoshoot

Here are a few of my recomended essentials to bring with you to your newborn photoshoot:

  • Extra nappies and wipes - I keep wipes at the studio, but please do bring nappies
  • A change of outfit for yourself and your baby - I have a selection of outfits for your baby at my studio, including rompers, bloomers and baby-grows, as well as dresses and tops for mum
  • A dummy (if your baby uses one) - even if they don't routinely use one, it can be a very useful soothing aid if baby is cluster or comfort feeding
  • Milk for feeding breaks, or your breastfeeding essentials such as nipple covers and a breastfeeding bra
  • Any sentimental items, such as a blanket that a family member has knitted, an outfit that is special, or their very first teddy bear or comforter.

Creating a relaxed environment for you and your baby

My cosy studio is designed to provide a warm, calming space for you and your new family. Photoshoots are taken at your baby's pace, allowing plenty of time for feeding and soothing your baby. I have a selection of hot and cold drinks for you to enjoy during your photoshoot, plus some luxury border biscuits. When you know what to expect at a newborn photoshoot, it’s easier to relax and enjoy the experience.
